Zollex Dual-Stage Valve Lapping Pastes – Regular | Expert | Diamond
Zollex lapping pastes are high-performance two-component abrasives engineered for optimal valve seat finishing. Unlike single-grade compounds that offer only rough or only finish lapping, our unique dual-stage formula delivers both in a single application. Each syringe contains a carefully balanced blend of coarse and fine abrasives, which operate sequentially during the lapping process.
How It Works:
-
Initial Cutting Stage – The coarse abrasive particles initiate controlled material removal, ensuring fast stock reduction and rapid shaping of the valve and seat contact surfaces. This ensures precise alignment and sealing geometry.
-
Microfinishing Stage – As the coarse phase wears down, the embedded fine abrasives take over. These ultra-fine grains progressively refine the surface, reducing roughness and improving sealing efficiency without requiring a change of compound.
Surface Finish Performance:
-
Regular: for general repairs – surface roughness down to 0.7 μm
-
Expert: for high-quality seat prep – down to 0.6 μm
-
Diamond: for precision-grade performance – as low as 0.5 μm
This range allows the user to select the optimal finish level based on engine type, operating load, and rebuild goals.
⚙️ Key Technical Advantages:
-
2-in-1 dual-phase lapping: eliminates the need to switch pastes during the process
-
Consistent abrasive distribution: guarantees uniform material removal and finish
-
Optimized grain progression: designed to work sequentially during valve rotation
-
Ideal for valve diameters from 16 mm to 60 mm
-
Distinctive rustling feedback: experienced users recognize the “correct” acoustic response during proper lapping
-
Compatible with cast iron, steel, and hardened seats
-
Suitable for both full rebuilds and quick DIY refreshes
Whether you’re performing full head reconditioning or simply reseating valves during a gasket replacement, Zollex pastes ensure proper sealing, improved compression, and extended engine life.
Application:
-
Clean the Parts: Thoroughly degrease the valve and valve seat using brake cleaner or carburetor cleaner. Make sure all surfaces are dry and free from old carbon, oil, or debris.
-
Apply the Paste: Squeeze a small amount of Zollex lapping paste onto the sealing surface of the valve (not on the stem). Spread evenly.
-
Begin Lapping: Insert the valve into the guide and use a manual or suction-type valve lapping tool. Rotate the valve back and forth between your hands or with the tool, using light to moderate pressure. Periodically lift and rotate the valve 90° to ensure even abrasion.
-
Monitor the Sound: A correct lapping process creates a distinctive “rustling” or “squeaking” sound. When this sound fades, the coarse phase has ended and the fine abrasive has taken over.
-
Check the Contact Pattern: Remove the valve, wipe both surfaces clean, and inspect the contact ring on both the valve and the seat. A uniform gray ring about 1.5–2 mm wide indicates good contact.
-
Repeat if Necessary: For worn or uneven seats, repeat the process until a full, consistent ring is achieved.
-
Final Cleaning: Once lapping is complete, thoroughly wash the valve, seat, and surrounding areas to remove all abrasive residue. Use compressed air and solvent for best results.
